Coastviews Magazine
Coastviews has been a publication on the San Mateo coast since the 1970's. Carolyn worked with Coastviews editor, Gwen O'Neill to create the first online version of the magazine. This version, hosted on a Domino server, ran from 1998 - 2003.
Carolyn designed and implemented the app using Lotus Notes Domino. She used complex security to display and hide content according to roles. The app mirrored the print version, and featured the following for end users:
Search of current and past issues
Categories, with multiple categories allowed to ease searching or browsing
Ability to easily find past issues and articles
High-resolution photographs and art.
For contibutors, such as artists , writers, photographers, and editors, the app featured an easy, role-based interface and workflow.
Artists and writers signed in to the web and uploaded photos and content, choosing the appropriate category, story and month from links or picklists .
Note: Screen shots of the creation process will be added soon.
Gwen O'Neill, editor, and, later, Christianne Keith, would work with articles in draft mode until ready to set articles to "ready to publish" status. When all the articles were ready, they pushed one button, which released that month's final copy to appear as a cohesive, organized site online, automatically arranged to mirror the print version, as shown to the left.
The title page listed articles by departments.
Online, you could browse all articles in a department from any month, and sort by fields that made sense for that category. For example, in the Book Reviews view, by clicking a column, you could find a favorite author or reviewer.
Carolyn displayed the most advanced search view for this application and designed the content creation process to collect keywords and multiple categories. (The form creation process will be explained as the portfolio is completed.)
In addition to creating the online version of Coastviews magazine, Carolyn occassionally contributed articles and photographs. (Articles will be included in the final version of this portfolio).
Gwen was the editor of Coastviews magazine.
